The male reproductive organs.

External male organs

The male reproductive organs are mostly outside his body ,

The external organs are namely

(a) the penis

(b) the scrotum

The penis : this is a tube shaped organs made up of spongy tissue which become hard, swallow and erect when sexually excited and during sexual relationship, it’s covered with very sensitive thin skin called the forskin which hangs loosely over the tips of the penis and cover the glans. In most parts of Africa, the forskin is usually removed by a minor operation called circumcision . This is to prevent the accumulation of waxy secretions ( secreted by the glans beneath the forskin). However, for uncircumcised men, it is advisable to pull back the forskin regularly and wash away the accumulated waxy discharge in order to prevent infection.

Function: the penis is the outlet for urine and discharge of semen during sexual intercourse.

The scrotum: It is a sensitive sack lying behind the penis and between the thighs. It is divided into two Chambers . It is covered with wrinkled skin and hair, which is sensitive to sexual stimulation. In cold weather , the muscle relax to ensure normal temperature around the testes.

Function: it encloses and protects the testicles from injury

It maintain the normal temperature required for sperm production.

Note: Sometimes at birth, the scrotal sac may be empty because one or both testes may be halted in the abdomen, resulting in a condition known as “undescended testicles”. However, early detection and medical intervention would have the situation corrected when the child is between 5-7 years old. Failure to detect this and correct it promptly will affect the reproductive functions of the child in life.
